(RETURN TO LIST OF SESSIONS)

Session 4 (week of March 15):
The U.S. Response to Hunger

This week we build off last week's discussion on "The Common Good" and take a look at the role of government and the many programs set in place to address hunger both home and abroad.

  • What is the role of government in addressing hunger? Make a list.

  • Continue to reflect further: Is there a difference among Federal, State and local governments? What role does government have for domesitc and/or international hunger? Edit your list from above.

  • Learn more about some of the programs funded by our government: National / International

  • In 2013, the U.S. spent 19% of its budget on international defense and security assistance vs less than 1% on humanitarian aide (inclusive of food programs). Review this quote from Pope Francis: "We are one human family whatever our national, racial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences. We are our brothers and sisters keepers, where ever they may be. Loving our neighbor has global dimensions in a shrinking world. At the core of the virtue of solidarity is the pursuit of justice and peace. Pope Paul VI taught that if you want peace, work for justice. The Gospel calls us to be peacemakers. Our love for all our sisters and brothers demands that we promote peace in a world surrounded by violence and conflict."

  • Discuss hunger in a context of peace and justice both home and abroad. How does Catholic Social Teaching and these words from Pope Francis challenge us to rethink our priorities at home and abroad? What can I do to educate others and stand with the vulnerable? What most challenges me about ensuring that Christian compassion influences programs to feed the hungry? What is my role as a citizen of this world to engage in the shapings of my government? (Read USCCB's To Hunger and Thirst for Justice for more insights.)

  • Study the scripture of A Prayer for the King (Psalm 72: 1-4). Consider Pope John Paul's reflection on this passage and then re-read. How does this passage relate to our discussion today? How does this passage define the common good? What does this passage say about your role in today’s society? About the role of every human? What would occur if someone was excluded from society according to this passage?

  • Print or save this week's Challenge Sheet and continue to reflect and study this topic. Next week we'll discuss what we personally can do as we wrap up our series this Lenten season.
